Inserting spreadsheets in drawings on Linux

Hi community,

as mentioned some weeks ago in the blog entry Inserting Images in the drawing without requiring the reference by Tanvi Sohoni, it is possible to insert objects by using the command Insert - Object. This is valid for the Windows version. My Linux version of DraftSight doesn't have this usefull feature, but I also have to insert frequently some spreadsheets into my drawings.

I will describe the way I manage to get around this missing feature, which I hope will be included soon also in the Linux and maybe the MAC version (I don't know if it is missing there, too).

First I make a spreadsheet in Libre Office as usual. You could use other similar programs as well. Then export the table into a pdf-file, using the built-in pdf-export function or pdf printers like cups-pdf. Later import the pdf into GIMP (or another image manipulation program with pdf-import), using a high resolution (300dpi). This point is important, as otherwise the result will be very fuzzy. Next step is to crop the image and export it as .jpg-file. This file can be imported into the DraftSight-drawing using the Insert - Image function. Uncheck location and scale, as otherwise the spreadsheet-table-image might appear as a little dot in layout mode. Set location and scale afterwards.

The disadvantage of this method is obvious: Any change inside the spreadsheet requires to go again through the whole process, which means lots of possible errors and wasted time. But it works. If anybody knows a better method, please share it here.

Greetings
