Transferring License Server

Be it following natural network resources management (update/upgrade), or due to hardware failure, a recurrent request that Technical Support handles is for information on how to change the License Server/transfer license to another server/machine.

This process, reflecting the current licensing model used, has two variants, depending on the License Manager application used (SNL - SolidNetWork License Manager or DSLS – Dassault Systemes License Server). Below, a quick overview:

If using SNL - SolidNetWork License Manager

-          On the new Server

1)      Install SNL. Once the installation is completed, do not activate the new License Manager.

-          On the users workstations

2)      Launch the DraftSight License Administrator. On the Server list, add the new Server (and server information)

-          On the old Server

3)      Launch SNL. On the “Server Administration” tab, click “Modify”. In the window that opens, select “Transfer a software license”, and click “Next”. When the process is completed, the old Server is disabled, and the new Server can now be activated

-          On the new Server

4)      Launch SNL, and in the “Server Administrator” Tab, click “Modify”.

In the “SolidWorks Product Activation window, select “Activate/Reactivate a software license”. Once the process is completed, the workstations should now be able to reach the new Server, and draw their licenses from it.

-          On the users workstations

5)      Launch the DraftSight License Administrator. On the Server list, Remove the old Server from the list.

If using DSLS – Dassault Systemes License Server

Due to specific characteristics of the application/ Licensing Model, the transfer of the application to a new/different machine is different, and cannot be performed exclusively by the user.

The License files used with DSLS are machine specific, generated based on the TargetID of the machine. In order to transfer the application to a different machine, the TargetID of the new machine must be provided to the Licensing Team, so that a new License is issued.

-          To obtain the TargetID of the new Server

1)      Go to  http://www.3ds.com/terms/software-keys/, and follow the instructions in the page.

-          On the new Server

2)      Install DSLS. Once the installation is completed, enrol the new License.

-          On the users workstations

3) Launch the DraftSight License Administrator. On the Server list, add the new Server (and server information). Remove the old Server from the list. Once the process is complete, the workstations should see the new server and draw their licenses from it.
