We all know the feeling when you are unluckily stuck in a traffic jam, especially the part where your car got to be stagnant while waiting for the traffic light that still far ahead from your location…
BUT, imagine this situation happens when you taking a flight!
If you seeing this for the 1st time, I am pretty sure you might get a little surprised about it. This is the actual live view that you could see from https://www.flightradar24.com.
That’s exactly where Air Traffic Controller plays a very important role on direct aircraft on the ground and through controlled airspace and can provide advisory services to aircraft in non-controlled airspace.
Challenge on planning an ATC shifts
The nature of the ATC role itself is not dangerous, BUT very important as any slight misdirection, could lead to a lethal outcome. Therefore, rules & regulations for ATC are highly practiced and emphasize to reduce any potential of human mistake.
There are a couple of common rules & regulations that applied on ATC shift :
- ATC must have a valid license (currency) and MUST always be recertified in rolling N months.
- Fatigue score – index to count if the ATC is at the risk of fatigue, which may lead to misjudgment.
- Each airspace may require a special license depends on the geography, climax of that airspace. Only the licensed ATC may be working on that airspace.
- Minimum rest hours, maximum working hours, overtime is also accountable
These are just a small part of the whole labor rule book that applies to the ATC role.
When it comes to planning, the planner must-see from many aspects so they are not missing any shift and at the same time, do not violate any of the ATC rules for each of the individual ATC
