Simple Fixed Sequence Planning

Consider the following scenario: you have a few tasks that need to be planned in a specific order.  Tasks B, C, and D must always be planned in the same order.  So if we move B after E, what should we expect?  Are there any other tasks that should be moved as well?

If you guessed C and D, then you’d be correct!  C and D need to move with B as well!

Simply moving the set of tasks together, touches on a concept called Fixed Sequence Planning Logic.

Fixed Sequence Planning Logic (or FSPL for short) is about maintaining order for a sequence of dependencies.  But why would anyone want to maintain those dependencies?

Consider a factory that makes cream-filled sandwich cookies.  You always have to assemble the cookie in the same order:  a chocolate wafer, then cream, then another chocolate wafer, right?  Each step is dependent on the former and nothing can come between that! The cookie can’t be completed until those three steps are achieved.  If you expected a cream-filled sandwich cookie, you’d be sorely disappointed if the cream was on the outside!

Now the above scenario is simple and easy to manage, but what happens if we increase the complexity?  What if we add more dependencies – maybe we need to bake the chocolate wafer ourselves?  What about parallel dependencies?  Stay tuned to learn more!

Our Delmia Quintiq Production Planning solutions handle scenarios like these all the time.  Learn more about our solutions here!
