Many industries are experiencing "shelf-lives constraint" which is defined as the length of time for which an item remains usable, fit for consumption.

Food & Beverage segment with product expiry date and A&D with composite shelf life are two well-known examples of such constraints.

Obviously, considering these constraints is critical to produce relevant production schedule.

DELMIA Ortems is able to manage shelf-life in two ways:

• as a hard constraints, meaning the scheduling engine must respect the defined shelf-life
• as a soft constraints, meaning the schedule engine can ignore the defied shelf-life

The soft way of managing shelf-life has actually been developed in 2021 and enables to use "operations color" capability to trigger alerts when shelf-life is not respected.

This soft constraint enable to give more flexibility to the scheduling engine to optimize the plan while empowering the user to easily assess the feasibility of the plan and manually adjust as needed.

FYI, this new capability has been developed as a User Exit (meaning as a Services-built capability, not yet embedded into standard DELMIA Ortems application) but can definitely be re-used for other implementation or demo (and also compatible for any future official software upgrades).
