Agile Development experience with KiwiRail

“Guess what? I am part of this awesome project development team for KiwiRail!”

In the year 2017, our department received the 1st ever Agile Development request for this KiwiRail project. Rather than appoint a dedicated Software Expert to own it, they make it also “Open for all”, which anyone in the department is allowed to apply for it as long as you think you are fitting into the requirement, that’s the part I feel I was very lucky to be the Starter for this project.

The entire journey was great and awesome! As software developers, we always need to be in the client’s shoes so that we can come out with the 100% fit solution for our beloved client. However, there are always got some obstacles in between as the direct communication between the software developer and the client does not exist. With the onsite capability along with my colleague, we aim for minimum effort with highest values achievement, and since there exist direct communication, I can straight away change->development->deploy immediately, and with that our client can get immediate benefits from our product in no time.

I still remember there was a time where the client ask if I can provide some details about their rostering, like a KPI and that will be very helpful for their planning. After gathering all the requirements on that piece of information that they desire, our client requests an estimation for such changes, since that was not part of the Sprint items for this week. Thanks to the flexibility of Delmia Quintiq Software, the answer that I was given to our client with just 2 words “ 5… minutes”. Immediately they get amazed with my answer and did ask for confirmation again, but well, rather than feedbacks with my word, I just use the client's laptop, and start changes directly on his screen, then viola! It's done!

Of course, that was just one of the story happen during my journey to KiwiRail, if you want to hear more about it, feel free to drop me a message here!

Fun fact 1: on the part when they ask for the reason why you are fitting this project, I just answered with a simple statement similar to this “I just can’t find a reason to accept that those requirements aren’t talking about me” HAHAHA

Fun fact 2: This trip was the 1st trip that I get held by the border control, request full fingerprints, and stuck for at least 3hrs inside the airport. The actual reason why they get on-hold with me was unknown, but my best guess was that it must be very unusual to have a foreigner purchase a 1 month + return flight ticket and from a country that was not common.
