In DSLS documentation (Configuring the DS License Server and Clients > Configuring and Activating a Cluster in Failover Mode section) It is mentioned that,
- In order to maximize quality of service, we recommend that the three machines be on the same subnetwork.
- The three machines exchange messages every time license data is modified (for example, in case of new license enrolled or license granted to a client). Only the modifications are transmitted and not all license data.
Question
What are the points to be considered when setting up DSLS failover Cluster? Is the communication between DSLS cluster members possible, even if each cluster members clock time is different?
Answer
This tip is described in the TechSupport knowledge-base article QA00000026323which talks about the best practice for setting up of DSLS failover Cluster.
- DSLS failover members to be on the same subnetwork in order to reduce the performance/latency issues. Note that having the three failover members on the same subnetwork is recommended but not mandatory.
- “the three machines be on the same sub network” means that the DSLS failover members should have IP addresses from the same sub network.
- DSLS works on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
- Having the 3 failover members at the same absolute time is mandatory, whatever their time zones, whatever their network location.
- To have a successful communication between the failover members, a maximum absolute time difference of one hour is tolerated between each failover member.
