What's heron's fountain ?

The Fountain of Heron, attributed to Heron of Alexandria, engineer, mechanic and mathematician living in the 1st century, allows to bring water – or another liquid – to a higher level than its initial level, using the force developed by previously compressed air. 

It has two glass balloons, a brass tray and a set of three tubes of different lengths. One of the tubes, fitted with a tapered tip, extends beyond the top. The whole thing is carried by a bronze tripod. 

How it works ?
Through the tray, water is introduced into the bottom balloon, then into the top balloon, without filling. The air above the water is at atmospheric pressure. 

Water is again poured into the tray: it flows into the lower balloon, which compresses the air. In the upper balloon, the compressed air forces the water to escape by jet through the tapered tip. 

The water of the jet then falls back into the plateau and flows back into the lower balloon; the jet is thus maintained and continues until all the water of the upper balloon is expelled.

The heron fountain is a great solution to save water and electricity at the same time .
