QUESTIONS | ANSWERS |
Are the models created in 3dsexperience compatible with older versions of Catia and Solidworks for viewing purpose? | Yes. These web-based 3D design applications we've demonstrated in the webinar can export 3D for use in older versions of both CATIA and SOLIDWORKS. |
Between Solidwork and Catia which is best suited to model building construction and smart city design solutions? | Building components can be modeled in full detail, both in SOLIDWORKS and CATIA. In the case of design and construction for an entire building, there are a number of roles within the CATIA brand focused specifically on the AEC industry. You can find more information here: https://www.3ds.com/products-services/catia/disciplines/construction/ |
Can the surface shape transfer to mesh for CFD meshing? | Yes. It can be opened natively in any 3DEXPERIENCE SIMULIA roles/apps for that type of simulation without translation. We can open in SOLIDWORKS Desktop or CATIA V5, and we could export to nuetral CAD file formats such as STEP, IGS, or STL. |
can we download the app in mobile phone or tablet? | The apps are web-based and can be accessed on any device through a web browser. There is no downloading required. Just login to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform in the cloud. |
does web based 3d experience covers all what we can do on computer installed solidworks or catia? | The apps on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform are not exact equivilants to SOLIDWORKS Desktop and CATIA V5. These apps are new and provide creative new workflows that do not exist in SOLIDWORKS Desktop and CATIA V5. Similarly, not all features/workflows that exist in SOLIDWORKS Deskptop and CATIA V5 exist on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. However, the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform is being developed rapidly, and it is our goal to add more and more features to continue to improve design, collaboration, and business operations. |
How to download the app? is it free for students? | Please find our student offerings here: https://academy.3ds.com/en/get-software |

Hello, I am looking for a tool to design and prepare 3D parts of a small electric car. How many time of formation do I need to master that cloud solution ? What it the price of those formation ? And do your 50% reduction applies for your 3 years start-up offer ? | This is a specific question that would best be answered after assessing your current CAD capabilities and the complexity of your proposed project. Please reach out to us at https://go.3ds.com/DesignEverywhere. |
Hi guys, actually it was pretty easy to understand. Is there some link where I can review a summary of this quality knowledge you just shared? | You can follow these links for further information on the webinar and the roles demonstrated: https://go.3ds.com/DesignEverywhere, https://go.3ds.com/DesignEverywhereCATIA, and https://go.3ds.com/DesignEverywhereSOLIDWORKS |
Is this adapted for the use of a single user only? | Yes. Even though we showed a collaborative process between three team members, all of these roles could have been assigned to a single person to complete on her/his own. |
as a contractor I am interested in leveraging fabrication output for manufacturing, any insight you could share? | The web applications demonstrated in this webinar are able to output both STEP and STL formats for fabrication. We also have general information on our AEC solutions (https://ifwe.3ds.com/construction-cities-territories) and more specific information on Design for Manufacture and Assembly - DFMA (https://ifwe.3ds.com/construction-cities-territories/game-changing-strategy-rapid-urban-development). |

How do the subD models go back into SolidWorks? Are they editable with parametric geometry?ESpecially in organic plastic products | We have a SOLIDWORKS Connector app as part of our Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS role. This installs an add-in within SOLIDWORKS Desktop to have direct and convenient access to sending and receiving data from the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform from within the SOLIDWORKS Task Pane. When opening something that was designed in xShape, you get the same high quality 3D body with curvature continuity across all faces just as it was defined in xShape. Because SOLIDWORKS Desktop does not have an equivalent feature to sub-d, you do not get a feature tree, but you can build features within SOLIDWORKS Desktop (Shells, Ribs, Mounting Bosses, et.c) required for the plastic product design you mentioned. |
HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT A SUB-D MODEL can be manufacturable? So that you haven't created undercuts? | We have Draft Analysis that can be activated at anytime. You can even leave it activated while you're edting the sub-d body! It instantaneously colors the part as you push and pull on it giving you immediate manufacturability feedback. |
How does this tie into Solidworks? can you load solidworks models in to manipulate them? | Yes. With the SOLIDWORKS Connector app as part of our Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS role mentioned above. |
how many files have one project? Are they individual for each App? | One! The file displayed in this post includes all of the xShape and xGenerative Design features. |
I am an experienced Catia V5 user, but this is a new design approach for me. How can i access documentation and tutorials to be familar witht his design process? | We have many training resources, but a great place to start is https://learningspace.3ds.com. |
in this example, how would you flatten the drawing to create good-for-construction structure (steel) packages, as well as say pre-cast concrete if that's the material to be used for the facade? Bill of materials? | As mentioned earlier, many more roles/apps are planned to be released. Stay tuned as it won't be long before we release our first full cloud sheet metal app. |
is this ecosystem intended as the way ahead to replace existing setup used by Solidworks users, or must they be Catia users ? | The 3DEXPERIENCE platform provide solutions for existing SOLIDWORKS customers, CATIA customers, and brand new companies that have not implemented any CAD solutions yet. It empowers organizations to collaborate in real-time from any device, connect with customers and suppliers, and track progress so you can deliver unrivaled products and customer experiences. |
these touch-friendly features imply that the touch device has to have very high spec requirements, no ? | Nothing out of the ordinary. I've used it successfully on iPhones, iPads, Google Pixel phones and tablets, less expensive Chromebooks, etc. |
What would be the practical application of your example ? Roofing design architecture ? | Yes, and many more - consumer products, automotive, aerospace, etc. Complex gepometric patterns are found on all kinds of products of all shapes and sizes. |
Possibility to divide face into different length subzones? | Yes, we have a Subdivide Faces feature that does exactly that. |
Possible use EKL in xgg? | Yes, xGenerative Design, the app contained with the 3D Pattern Shape Creator role, supports writing code directly in the Enterprise Knowledge Language (EKL). There is a specific type of node called a "Script" node where you can write your own code. |
Can the process to prepare the panels for manufacturing be automated for each panel? If yes, in which app? | Yes! This could have been done in the xGenerative Design app, but we wanted to make sure to display the great capabilities of the xDesign app as well. |
The work Dan did on the singular panel to prep for manufacturing, would that need to be repeated on each unique panel, or do those prep for manufacturing details also scale across the whole design. | Great idea! As mentioned earlier, we could have accounted for those flanges within the xGenerative Design app. |
What about using existing catia models and cross collaboration between desktop & web versions ? | There are a number of different CATIA roles on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Some are web-based, such as 3D Pattern Shape Creator, and others are Native Apps, which install on your local machine. All CATIA roles have a shared data model and can work seamlessly together on the same data in one environment, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on the cloud. |
What roles are you using? Is it CATIA or SW role | In our webinar we demonstrated both SOLIDWORKS and CATIA web applications. 3D Sculptor (xShape) and 3D Creator (xDesign) are SOLIDWORK brand apps while 3D Pattern Shape Creator (xGenerative Design) is a CATIA brand app. All were developed as 3DEXPERIENCE native web apps using the 3DEXPERIENCE Convergence Geometric Modeler (CGM). https://www.spatial.com/products/cgm |
Where we will find the recording of this webinar? | You can find the recording inside the posts for this webinar within the CATIA and SOLIDWORKS communities here: https://go.3ds.com/DesignEverywhereCATIA, and https://go.3ds.com/DesignEverywhereSOLIDWORKS |
Who is the target consumer for this presentation? | The roles and process demonstrated in this webinar can be applied to any industry and individual interested in non traditional technology assets that make accessible the economics of information goods and networks. |
