End of October in Tokyo, the World Design Organization (WDO) set to take significant strides in design.
As WDO board member for the past 4 years, Dassault Systèmes' VP Design Experience & head of the Design Studio @AA attended the #WorldDesignAssembly, an unparalleled meeting opportunity for the design community, a thoroughly invigorating event too.
Such meet-ups of the worldwide design community are extremely valuable, as experiences are shared, opinions evolve, and opportunities arise.
You might be interested in Anne Asensio's impressions from these eventful 3 days :
🌍Day 1: The Research and Education Forum on Oct 26th focused on “Design Beyond” curated by Kazuo Tanaka. To kick off the proceedings, Ayse (Eye-Shay) Birsel gave a keynote focusing on the notion of “feint”. Along with Meghan Preiss, Anne Asensio moderated the sessions on Design for Human-Centered technologies. Design for Humanity's track invited explorations on our understanding of design & designing for humanity while Behavioral Design for the Planet aimed to highlight design capable of generating products and services that trigger behavioral change for Planet Earth.
🌎 On day 2, the WDO Design conference took place. 2 keynotes most impressed: one from IDEO’s executive director Ana Arriola-Kanada and the other from anthropologist Tim Ingold, who took us 300 years in the future… “History has come to an end. The future is not a problem to solve, but a life to be lived." Tim reminds us that we do not need a "universal" view of the world but a “pluriversal” one…
❤️ Dr Patricia Moore was awarded the WDO World Design Medal for her outstanding life and work.
As a pioneering figure in design, Dr. Patricia Moore is a leading authority on consumer lifespan behaviours and requirements. For a period of three years from 1979 to 1982, Moore travelled throughout the United States and Canada disguised as women of more than 80 years of age. This experience of responding to people, products, and environments as an elder enabled an empathetic approach to design that informed much of her future work, from NASA to Whirlpool.
In the Planet Session, Monika Koncz-MacKenzie from Dassault Systèmes partner EllenMacArthur Foundation was also a highlight, presenting our collaboration as part of the Circular Design Leaders Circle.
🌏 Day 3 took place the General Assembly per se. The WDO Board showcased the collaborative work that took place during the 2021-2023 term through portfolio initiatives. 3DS Design Studio collaborates with the impressive Taiwan Institute of Design Research on capturing design impact figures from World Design Capitals, such as 2022 WDC, the city of Valencia in Spain and India's Design policy program.
We also were very proud to launch WDO’s collaboration with the legendary Domus magazine (founded in 1928 by Giò Ponti) with a first issue.
Last but not least… the new board for WDO 2023-2025 was elected, with members from all over the globe. Their mission is precious, as design is set to continue playing an essential role in public policies, corporations and help transform our societies for more social justice and against climate unbalance & resource depletion. The WDO has a consultative role to the United Nations.
Nothing can beat meeting in person. The global design community, academics, corporate professionals and institutes, constitutes the beating heart of WDO. We now look forward to the next World Design Assembly in London in 2025 ! Stay tuned :)
