Finn Mast Project Composites Engineering Structural Model Creation Mechanical Scenario Creation

Dear all,

After the third episode about composite structure optimization, we will introduce you to the study of the Finn mast's dynamic behavior using the 3DExperience Platform.

A visit at the Ecole Nationale de Voile et des Sports Nautiques (National School of Sailing and Water Sports) of Quiberon will give you a taste of how the dynamic tests are performed for the French Sailing Team to characterize the quality of a mast.

Our goal here is to study the damping of the mast. To do so, two aspects are considered: the damping of the entire structure and the damping of each composite layer.

For the analysis of the structure, a modal dynamic Analysis is created using a frequency step and a modal dynamic step is created to match the tests made in real life (same boundary conditions and loadings).

For the analysis of the composite plies, tests were physically made on small composite plates and then recreated in the 3DExperience platform. Post processing work is then done to identify the damping coefficients of each layer.

Next step, the mast is then manufactured at the HEOL Composites facilities following the design process requirements. At the same time, virtual mast is assembled to sail & boom to create a Fluid-Structural simulation. This analysis will provide a realist behaviour of the mast regarding wind & waves.
