Embracing Simplicity and Innovation with CATIA: An Insight from Jake Steward, CATIA Champion

In the ever-evolving landscape of aviation research, simplicity and intelligence in design tools are paramount. @JS, a Senior Research Engineer at Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR), exemplifies this through his enthusiastic use of CATIA.

“I love using CATIA because it’s so simple to use, and everything is very logical and laid out in a very intelligent manner,” says Jake, shedding light on his preference for this advanced tool. At NIAR, Jake is immersed in diverse aviation-related projects, from composites to CAD CAM, and notably, he leads the digital twin initiative. This effort allows customers to transform 2D drawings into 3D models, thereby enabling extended use of aircraft beyond their design service life.

NIAR’s primary focus includes aircraft composites, learning technologies, CAD CAM, and aging aircraft solutions. Within the CAD CAM department, Jake’s role is pivotal in leveraging the 3DExperience platform to its fullest. “We use everything from the 2D solutions to the 3D solutions, the reverse engineering solutions, the FTA, everything that’s encompassed on a 3DExperience platform,” he explains.

One of the most significant advantages of the 3DExperience platform, as highlighted by Jake, is its collaborative nature. It enables seamless cooperation among team members, enhancing efficiency and productivity. “It’s very good for collaboration and allows everybody to simultaneously work on some of the same stuff,” Jake emphasizes.

The journey from 2D to 3D not only addresses the business challenges of effectively utilizing extensive information but also ensures the creation of a smart, intelligent model. By integrating various data sources, standards, and existing drawings, Jake and his team craft comprehensive solutions that meet the complex demands of modern aviation research.

Through his work at NIAR, Jake Steward demonstrates how the intelligent and intuitive design of CATIA, supported by the robust 3DExperience platform, drives innovation and extends the operational life of critical aviation components. His experience underscores the transformative power of advanced digital tools in shaping the future of aviation research and development.
