EXPLORE THE NEW GENERATION DATA CENTER IN 3D

In April 2019, 5 teams led by CATIA and SOLIDWORKS experts, and bringing the most progressive architecture and design firms together, had 48 hours do design the Milan of the future.

TheTEAM3...

I, @NS, am an architect by training specialized in parametric Design working for the Cloud organization teamed up with GERARD BERTOMEU from CODA architecture and LORENA KNEZEVIC from Perkins & Wills Architects.

THE CONCEPT

The first question was how to represent data? What kind of data and what for? We also wanted to work both at the urban and architectural scale to avoid being too abstract or too concrete , but most of wall we wanted  to build a signal that would make people realize that data is something real, that it exists and has a spatial presence.

So in a context where sustainability is central but also part of technological growth, we imagined this futuristic datacenter, which shape enhances the cooling of its core, which would be part of the city and linked to other parts of the projects - like the data collectors). What we wanted is to break the gap between people and their data and raise thoughts on its impact on our environment.

THE CREATION

We mixed many native and web tools. We divided the workload between the 5 participants and each would be in charge of part of the bigger assembly.A large part of the modelling was performed on xGenerative Design, but also in CATIA Imagine and Shape as well as in Building Space Planning, for the renders for example. We were able to create a consistent assembly, linking all our parts, thanks to a perfect teamwork.

The brainstorming took a complete day and the drawing took then 50 Percent of the brainstorming day. Then we splitted the project in 5 in order to move faster as we spent the first day in full brainstorming

We used ‘CATIA GENERATIVE SHAPE DESIGN’ in order to create the ‘parasol shaped’ condensation receptacle. For that purpose the knowledge pattern has been created directly in CATIA and then populated inside the ‘3DEXPERIENCity’ model of Milan. Then Lorena from PERKINS+WILL created, inside the virtual mockup a ‘wave surface’ that was parametered function of the green spaces present inside the 3DEXPERIENCity virtual model surfaces, this time using ‘CATIA X GENERATIVE DESIGN’, which also has been used to create the panelization, the facades, as well as the canopies at the bottom of the tower.

Honestly, it has been amazing to how quickly CATIA X GENERATIVE DESIGN’ has been able, not only to generate patterns and forms, but to lead us to our initial design, and then generate alternatives by modifying them in real time.
