Design Contest | September Session | Phare de l'île Vierge

I am delighted to participate in the September Design Contest and would like to introduce you to an exceptional monument in western France that contributes greatly to the richness of Brittany's heritage :  le phare de l'île Vierge.

Introduction

The world's tallest lighthouse made of cut stone

The rich Breton heritage accords a special place to lighthouses owing to its deep maritime roots. Île Vierge hosts Europe's tallest lighthouse, a majestic silhouette that looms over Brittany, France. This imposing structure, in service since 1902, and later through its automation in 2010, stands guard for the safety of ships arriving from the open sea. The ascent of this 82.5-meter granite tower is an extraordinary experience, with a glass dome that appears to reach the stars, emitting a luminous beam visible up to 50 kilometers on clear days. The Kersanton granite adorning the edifice, the thousands of azure opaline plates adorning the interior of the shaft, and the impressive Saracen-vaulted staircase, consisting of 383 steps, all warrant special attention. This unforgettable experience testifies to the grandeur of Breton heritage and its deep-seated attachment to the sea.

Sustainable infrastructures

Cultural heritage with contemporary environmental imperatives

The Phare de l'Île Vierge perfectly embodies the principles of sustainability and sustainable development. Located in a pristine natural environment, this historic monument seamlessly integrates with its coastal landscape, minimizing its impact on local biodiversity. Furthermore, its modernization has enabled the adoption of eco-friendly technologies, reducing its electricity consumption and carbon emissions while maintaining its crucial role in maritime safety. In this way, the Phare de l'Île Vierge symbolizes the importance of reconciling the preservation of our cultural heritage with contemporary environmental imperatives, demonstrating how sustainable development can be a driving force for the conservation and protection of our natural and cultural treasures.
