Design and Technology
The design is a completely unique with a revolutionary monohull 23 meters long and weighing nearly 6.5 tonnes. Its construction, which took more than two years, required the participation of more than 90 people, including 37 designers, and the use of 7,000 square meters of carbon fibers and 400 square meters of honeycomb aluminum. On the sides of the monohull are the foils, two "wings" of nearly 5 meters each, which allow the Luna Rossa to "fly" over the water and reach a speed of over 90 km/h.
The revolutionary AC75 Luna Rossa, Boat 1, was the first full-foiling monohull. It was launched on October 2, 2019 in Cagliari, at the base camp of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team. It represented Italy and the Circolo della Vela Sicilia at the America's Cup. The inauguration ceremony of the second AC75 Luna Rossa, the Boat 2, took place in Auckland (New Zealand) on October 20, 2020. A natural evolution of the previous one, this second monohull was modified in the light of data collected and analyzed by the design team, in collaboration with the navigation team.
Team
Under the leadership of Max Sirena, skipper and manager, the Italian team competed aboard the AC75 "Luna Rossa". 11 people sail aboard the AC75, each with a specific role. In addition to their position on the boat, each sailor also has a precise function ashore and works in coordination with the design team to improve the performance of the vessel, and with the shore team, who develop the vessel and manufacture its components.
The sailing team, including the coach, is made up of 21 men. Within the group, ten experienced sailors work alongside ten young talents, who have joined the team as part of the “New Generation” project, born out of the desire to strengthen what has become a constant ambition of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team over the years that is to give continuity to the challenge.
America’s Cup
The America's Cup, created in 1851 is the oldest sports trophy in history. Combining sport and technology, this is the most prestigious sailing race. Luna Rossa's first appearance dates back to 2000, when the team reached the America's Cup final against Team New Zealand after winning the Louis Vuitton Cup, beating the American team AmericaOne. Over the past twenty years, the team has competed in six America's Cup campaigns.
At the end of the last edition in February 2017, just after the victory of the New Zealand team against the defender Oracle Team USA, Agostino Randazzo, president of Circolo della Vella Sicilia, and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team challenged the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, becoming the first Challenger of Record tasked with organizing the next edition of the race, alongside the current Cup defender.
