3DEXPERIENCE CHINA HACKATHON 2021| Interview with Dr. Huang Haiqiao, Associate Professor of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology

As reported two days ago, a third CATIA Hackathon will take place at Shanghai, in China, November 4- 6, 2021. 6 teams will work side by side with mentors to design innovative cable systems projects.

Participants will use the CATIA 3D Shape Designer role, which provides 3 main X series modeling tools in the cloud. A good way to implement the instructions given to them:

Change yourself, change the world, let creativity be young forever!

Read below the interview with Dr. Huang Haiqiao, one of the 6 mentors.

Looking for the Best Fit between Beauty and Practicality

Looking through Huang Haiqiao's resume, with "Bachelor of Fashion Design and Engineering from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Master of Computer Science from University of Bath, UK, and Doctor of Fashion Digitalization from Hong Kong Polytechnic University" coming into view, the image of a fashion designer who integrates Chinese and Western cultures and experiences and is full of artistic atmosphere is vividly on the page.

After reading on: "... Director of Beijing Garment Industry Digital Engineering Technology Research Center... The main research direction is 3D digitalization of clothing, 3D printing and product innovation, wearable smart clothing... He has published more than 20 papers. Among them, 4 articles have been published in SCI journals such as Pattern Recognition, Computer in Industry and Textile Research Journal, 6 papers have been included in engineering index EI, 5 papers have been included in scientific conference paper citation index CPCI, 3 papers have been included in CNKI - China Academic Journal Network Publishing Master Library, and he has 1 invention patent, 4 utility model patents, 6 computer software copyrights, etc.", we can see that Dr. Huang is clearly a technical expert.

"How can art and technology complement each other and coexist in one person?", when the author raised this question, Dr. Huang's answer was calm and clear: "My research direction itself is clothing intelligence and digitalization. Design and technology are both means, and there is no contradiction. They are all aimed at solving one or more problems, and they are all supported by each other to achieve one goal, that is, to produce valuable products. "

1_ The ultimate goal of design is beauty and practicality

In Dr. Huang's view, there is a difference between design and art. If the two are raised to the height of values, art is often expressing artists' own ideas or creativity, serving themselves, while design is designed for others and serving others. In this sense, in the process of seeking innovation and change, the designer's "service mentality" cannot be changed. As long as this mentality remains unchanged, the final designed product will definitely be a good product.

Consumers' demands and expectations will bring challenges and contradictions to designers, which is a natural thing and a normal psychology of people. As Lu Xun said, "Dissatisfaction is the upward wheel". With the higher pursuit of consumers, designers will have motivation and direction. However, in the process of pursuing beauty, designers need to adhere to two principles. The first principle is that aesthetics and conception must be lofty, product positioning must be accurate, and blindly catering to vulgar or even low-level tastes is not enough, let alone lasting. The second principle is that design should face the market or even market segment. The design leaving the market is tantamount to an illusion and has no sense at all. "For example, in the men's wear market, the men's clothing market for young men is completely different from the men's clothing market for middle-aged and even old people. No matter in appearance or size, men of different ages have different psychology and require different products. How to meet the real needs of different market segments is what designers really need to consider. If the needs of market segments can be taken into account, its final success is undoubtedly and necessary", Dr. Huang explained.

Based on this service concept, Dr. Huang thinks that an excellent designer should take more into account the future lifestyle and living conditions, think more about what the future society and people will look like, and make some forward-looking and blank designs and attempts accordingly. For example, barrier-free design, the designer's task is to realize functions under limited conditions, so that the design work will be more valuable.

2_ Future of digital intelligent clothing industry

On the official website of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, we can see that Dr. Huang's scientific research projects include "R&D and Industrialization of Nano Self-generating Smart Running Shoes", "Research and Development of Solar Smart Clothing" and so on. When asked how to describe his career, Dr. Huang tends to describe it like this, "It should be more of a role in product design or development, which is my position. I studied clothing first, and later learned computer, so I am engaged in clothing design, fashion industry engineering development, research and development work, which are integrated together. "

Dr. Huang has been observing and thinking about the current situation of fashion industry. He thinks that the current industry ecology is facing the challenges and pressures of transformation and upgrading, and as professionals in product research and development, they should help enterprises achieve upgrading from the efficiency level, quality level, informatization level and digitalization level, and empower enterprises through scientific and technological means. Only in this way can enterprises touch broader opportunities and fields.

As for how to build the road of digitalization and intelligence of clothing, Dr. Huang shared the fields of fashion three-dimensional digitalization, smart clothing and 3D printing that he has focused on and studied for many years:

The greatest value of fashion 3D digitalization has three points: Let R&D personnel see the effect of 3D clothing samples as quickly as possible, and make quick judgments, reduce the proofing of physical samples, save costs and improve efficiency; the changes in marketing are also huge, and 3D digital sample clothes will be greatly improved in terms of sales efficiency and display quality; many big brands have entered this field, and the marginal benefits of clothing products are expanding.

The broad sense and narrow sense of intelligent clothing: In a broad sense, many clothing are intelligent, and functional clothing such as moisture absorption and perspiration can be called intelligent clothing. In a narrow sense, the meaning of intelligence refers to clothing with informatization and digitalization, and its definition should be that it can interact with the body, people and clothing. There is still a long way to achieve such intelligence.

3D garment printing will definitely enter our life, but it will take time: 3D printing technology researchers should realize that textile and garment industry is a very important application field, and if 3D printing can replace sewing, this industry will undergo earth-shaking changes. In addition, 3D printing technology must be combined with traditional technology, because technology will be replaced, but traditional technology and culture still have vitality and will not disappear.

3_ 3DEXPERIENCE Hackathon

Open a window of innovation for young designers

Talking about the origin with 3DEXPERIENCE, Dr. Huang said that as early as 2013, he began to use its components, created high-quality works with 3DEXCITE DELTAGEN, and completed the exhibition with 3DEXCITE PICTUREBOOK to serve the procurement activities of enterprises. As a new tutor, Dr. Huang hopes that the team can truly understand and handle the relationship between beauty and practicality, and bring beauty design and functional design into related design fields. As for the cross-border design on Hackathon, Dr. Huang has carried out research in advance, full of confidence and eager to try. For this year's 3DEXPERIENCE Hackathon, he hopes to bring the concept of parametric design into automobile design, and embody the concept of barrier-free. After all, Dr. Huang has formed a mature design paradigm in the aspect of "barrier-free clothing". He hopes that through the kindling of "barrier-free", he can ignite the innovation passion of all the team members and make a single spark become a prairie fire.

A good designer should not only look up at the starry sky, but also be down-to-earth, pursuing beautiful design, and not forgetting the initial intention of designing for people. From Dr. Huang, we can see the persistence of a local designer. He is rooted in the fertile soil of Chinese culture and examines his design road from the simplest humanistic care. At the same time, he overlooks Chinese and Western cultures, blending and using them flexibly. Via Dr. Huang, we can see the future of Chinese design, and we sincerely hope that Dr. Huang can design more wonderful products, and discover more design talents through his discerning eyes, so as to strengthen our Chinese design strength.
