Hello fellow designers,
How are you doing today? What did you do this weekend?
As it was raining this sunday, I decided to beat the sunday blues by going to an exciting exhibition: 3D Printing | Science Museum of London
The exhibition showcased around 600 objects, most of them were hung in the wall. This type of wall might be soon looks like children's future bedrooms. Indeed, i learnt you can easily get a 3D printer for less than £1000 nowadays. Here is a picture of the simplest home 3D printer you can find.
One of the topics which is coming out frequently when you speaks about 3D printing is that if everyone can print design at home, the world might be awash in a sea of mediocre junk. In a personal point of view, I think "Inversive embodiment" is a perfect example that show that great and professional designer like Tobias Klein will always stand out from the crowd.
The complexity of the form is simply outstanding ! Here you can get more information about it: http://art.kleintobias.com/1104-inverted-embodiment
Here is another figure made by another great designer Neri Oxman. The figure has been printed with the only 3D printer able to print such complex objects.
There are many different 3D printers, from basics home models to sophisticated industrial machines, each builds objects in layers. One of the following images show a simple printer that you could have in your home.
The exhibition teachs you how 3D printing can improve lives, art and business. Among the pieces displayed I saw human organs printed with living cells, impressive prototyping of building and skyscrapers and much more.
If you have planned a trip to London in the next couple of months think about going to Science Museum it definitely worth it !
