Microsoft Office applications use EMF+ to display vector images and by default, Insight for Excel uses this format to display chemistry images. MS Teams and other modern Web browsers use the SVG image format to display images. Starting with Insight for Excel 2025, there will be an option in the user settings (Settings > Pictures > Image Format : "Use SVG") to save the Insight for Excel Workbook with chemistry images in SVG format to allow these to be viewed in Web based Excel versions.
Note 1: Insight for Excel does not work with Web based versions of Excel. To use an Insight for Excel Workbook with a web browser, you must still create it by using a locally installed version of MS Excel with Insight for Excel installed. Before saving the Workbook, you must enable the "Use SVG" option and ensure that all structures have been rendered, (and if they were already shown, you need to reshown them - use "Reshow" under the option "Show") in order for the structure image type to be saved as SVG. The images will then be visible when the Workbook is opened in the Web version of Excel or in a local version of Excel which does not have Insight for Excel installed.
Note 2: When the chemistry images are saved using the SVG format, Excel will save the images both as SVG and PNG images within the Workbook. As a result, the saved Workbook will have a significantly larger file size compared to if this option is not used.
Note 3: As indicated in the Pictures tab of the Insight for Excel 2025 Settings dialog, this feature is still experimental and might change in the future.
