3DEXPERIENCE Lab's Kate Reed has a mission - To Harmonize Product, Nature and Life

When I was sifting through the portfolios of prospective students for Fabricademy 2020, a program 3DEXPERIENCE Lab Boston hosts at Waltham Fab Lab, I came across one that struck me as unique. The designer had been working at the precarious intersection of nature and technology. I say 'precarious' because unlike other technology-focused artists, her work was just at the exact zone of nature-inspired technology - neither too techy nor too nature-heavy. It was Biomimetics done well. Biomimetics relates to synthetic methods that mimic biochemical processes. It was @KR's work.

Dassault Systemes SOLIDWORKS is partners with The Fab Foundation, the global network of over 2000 fab labs and makerspaces. We support makers and innovators from across the world through this relationship and launched a Maker Offer last year to facilitate further easy access to our software for makers. We give a number of scholarships to deserving candidates who want to pursue courses around Digital Fabrication run by MIT and The Fab Foundation.

With the help of one such scholarship by SOLIDWORKS, Kate pursued Fabricademy in our Waltham Lab and further honed her skills around Textiles, Computational Biology and Fashion. Just after she graduated from the program, we offered her to join the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab as its first Artist-in-Residence. She started using 3DEXPERIENCE Platform (3D Creator, 3D Sculptor, 3D Pattern Shape Creator) with help from 3DS Mentors @SR @WS @AB @NM @JT She will soon start working on simulation of her designs using SIMULIA solutions.

@PB just published an article in 3DS Perspectives on Kate Reed and her work. We invite you to enjoy it and share with your friends and colleagues. This is a future star being accelerated by the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab.
