File from AutoCAD with reference layers which I can't turn on/reconnect...any ideas?

First apologies - irregular 2D DraftSight user, so this may be obvious to those of you using this day in and day out. I've been sent a file by a client. Built in AutoCAD, it contains both 'reference dependent' and 'non-reference' files. The reference depedent files are a mix of PDF's and DWG files. I have all of these files which came as part of a package. However whilst I can see them in Layer Manager, I can't activate them (so I can see the darn things!) because apparently 'reference-dependent layers' can't be made active according to the little box that pops up.

I assume that there must be a way to reconnect up these layers. I'm using DraftSight Standard as I only work in simple 2D, and I'm wondering whether this is a feature that isn't available with my version. I'm currently hunting through the information to see if that's the issue, but if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful.

For info I don't need to be able to amend these layers - I just need to be able to see them - as the name suggests - as a reference!

Thanks in advance!
