glTF is Universal♾️

Now that 3DEXPERIENCE World 2024 has concluded, let's resume a prior topic of a simple acronym "FUSE" to describe glTF.

The first letter F stands for Fast, followed by U, which stands for Universal

Unlike proprietary formats such as usdz by Apple or slddrw by SOLIDWORKS, glTF is defined by a wide independent industry alliance (Khronos), involving manufacturers such as IKEA, eCommerce giants such as Amazon, and internet platforms such as Google and Meta.

So glTF is widely accepted globally by various stakeholders, similar to jpg or mp4.

Additionally, glTF is NOT an authoring format, so it removes confidential design and engineering data, such as native design features, component constraints, metadata and so on. It significantly alleviates concerns on data safety and security.

Now let's talk about costs which is a major driver in any adoption. To begin with, glTF is a royalty-free specification which lowers the barriers for both developers and consumers.

Also on the 3DEXCITE Product Communicator side, let's compare the costs to export various deliverables.

For instance, this static image rendering takes about 5 credits. A picture is worth a thousand words, so pictures are massively used over the internet.

What about a 3D model? Is it worth a thousand pictures, or a million words? Then how many credits should a 3D glTF publishing cost?

Turns out a glTF costs similarly to a high-definition rendering. Wow, I'd use 3D glTF as much as possible😄 as it's much more cost-effective.

In conclusion, glTF is Universal because of its open industry alliance, data safety and security, and cost effectiveness.

Let's give it a try and see how it can make your internet presence more engaging!
