Productization Fundamentals and Definitions

Welcome!

If you're reading this, that suggests you're passionate about improving the construction industry. Here is our whitepaper that gives an overview of why we're confident in this approach:

The Productization Whitepaper

The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is at the precipice of transformation. Demands continue to grow for cost-efficient and sustainable buildings, rapid delivery and customisation. Stakeholders have begun to rethink how to best deliver value for more sustainable and cost-effective built environments. Some have turned to prefabrication to overcome logistical issues, but they’re still burdened by increased costs and siloed trades. This creates financial sinkholes that risk construction industry productivity.

Productization is an approach to delivering efficient construction solutions for developers to transform the entire ecosystem for better quality and cost efficiency. Virtual Construction Bricks, defined by multi-trade assemblies, standardised interfaces and generative variants, are at the heart of this new approach. Standing apart from traditional manufacturing techniques, these sub-systems employ Virtual Construction Twins to revolutionise factory construction and redefine AEC roles to reflect a fundamental shift in the industry.

Productization positions firms at the forefront of the construction industry through the use of Virtual Construction Bricks that allow variability, speed and hyper-customisation. Standardised interfaces and generative designs realise the goal of interoperability, collaboration and optimisation across all construction management systems.

Definitions:

  • Virtual Construction Bricks : generative, digital representations of a Construction System with embedded design rules, parameters, constraints, encapsulating construction knowledge and know-how. Virtual Construction Bricks are the basic building blocks for building design, right from the sketch stage.
  • Virtual Construction Twins : The integration of all construction data, virtualised processes and virtual team. The 3DEXPERIENCE Construction Virtual Twin is composed of all of the Virtual Construction Bricks of all of the construction elements in a building.
  • QTO : Quantity Take Off; customised to requirements
  • Design Documentation : layout drawings; schematic, low level-of-detail general arrangement/layout drawings
  • Manufacturing Simulation + Documentation : downstream processes mostly relating to DELMIA where individual Parts are required
  • Expert Knowledge :  These could be engineering and manufacturing constraints, geometric boundaries related to transportation or the structure of the design based on experience.
  • Non-Transformable Parts : Standard buildings products which are not modified.
  • Transformable Parts : Any building products which come as stock and are operated upon (cut, drilled, etc.).
  • Continuous Level of Development  (LOD) : The sequential generation of a product's information with traceability through all stages and scales.
