Derived Format Converter FAQ

Hopefully by now you've seen several presentations about Derived Output for CAD data and where/how to generate the file(s). I've received numerous questions when we discussed about the Derived Format Converter (DFC) that generates the Derived Output and so I would like to clarify a few here to guide you through:

1. Installations?: For OnPremise, it's a software download and install. For OnCloud, the software will be installed automatically when user click on the "Derived Format Converter" application from the compass.

2. Where to go to specify the Derived Format and when should the DFC execute the job?: Please see the image below.

3. What role(s) do I need to get successful output from the DFC?: PCS(IFW, CVS) + Engineering Data Exchange Manager (EXH) + Additional role for specific file type (e.g. If you need to STEP file then you'll need the "Conversion Data Integrator for STEP Multidiscipline (STS)" role).

4. Individual "regular" User's DFC:

4.1. My DFC is launched when Windows started but I can't generate anything:? First, ensure that you've launched the DFC again using the DFC app from the compass. This will allows it to ask/set your credentials. Second, ensure that you have the necessary role for the specific Derived Output file you're trying to generate along with the origin CAD Connector.

4.2 Will other user be able to access my DFC while it's running?: No, The DFC will only run for the specific user who has launched it.

5. Administrator User's DFC:

5.1. The issue/solution in 4.1 applies here as well.

5.2. Will other user be able to access my DFC while it's running?: Yes. Launching the DFC as the Administrator will process all jobs coming through for all users.

5.3. The Administrator already have all the necessary role to generate a STEP file, do all the users in the system need to have the same set of role to generate a STEP file?: No, the DFC launched by the Administrator will use the roles assigned to the Administrator.
