🦖 Creating the SLUGASAURUS REX Episode 5 of 6

Back in the shop, it was time to focus on the details that would bring Frank to life. This was one of my favorite phases of the entire project. After weeks of welding, cutting, gluing, and shaping, I finally got to slow down and focus on the little details that make a sculpture feel real.

Every scale, wrinkle, scratch, and texture would help transform Frank from a giant sculpture into a believable prehistoric creature.

I textured the entire head using two-part epoxy sculpting clay, building up layers of scales, wrinkles, scratches, and imperfections to create realistic dinosaur skin. Huge thanks to Andy Barnes for designing a custom texture roller that helped us create an organic, natural-looking surface.

At the same time, my 3D printers were working overtime, producing spine spikes, claws, and other details. Every piece had to be printed, fitted, textured, and installed. Thanks to Gian Calise's work in SOLIDWORKS xDesign, everything fit together perfectly.

Once the texturing was complete, I rolled Frank outside and covered the entire dinosaur in white primer. Seeing all the different materials become one unified sculpture was a huge milestone.

Meanwhile, Luke Daley and the team at Orbital FX were creating a set of hyper-realistic custom eyes. Using advanced sculpting, painting, and resin-casting techniques, they produced an incredible final result that truly gave Frank a soul.

With the texture complete, the details installed, and the primer down, Frank was finally ready for paint.
