1 - Create worker task with EWD

In this lesson:

EWD at a high level:

Who is meant to use: Process/Industrial Engineers

When to use EWD: After a first design of the production line

What do you want to do with EWD: Validate that worker tasks are safe and efficient

EWD starting point:

In order to use EWD you must first define a Product Process Resource (PPR) structure like in the one the image below.
You will find more information on how to define a PPR for EWD  in lesson 5.

EWD interface (navigator)

EWD main interface is the navigator on the left of the screen.

The navigator is divided in 3 categories: Resources, Product Build Up & General Systems. Here you will be able to find the element you've defined in your PPR.

Create worker task in EWD

Before creating worker task inside EWD, it is important to understand the sequence of Worker task inside the operation. For example, inside a bolt screwing operation, there would be 4 worker tasks:

  1. Get bolt from bin
  2. Insert bolt inside assembly
  3. Get power tool
  4. Screw bolt

When you want to create a worker task, click on the plus icon on an operation.

Then the worker task panel will open:

Here, you will describe to the software what is the action performed by the worker. In this example, the worker task is to "get the power screwdriver" with the right hand. Then, if the sentence is correct, you will be able to click on the create button.
If the create button is grey and unclickable, that means that the sentence is incorrect. Some "broken link" icons should be displayed between the different part of the sentence. Make sure to have none to have a correct sentence.

Worker tasks

When you click on "create", a lot of magic is happening.

The Smart Posture Engine (SPE) technology automatically creates 4 manikin postures in 3D.

Then the Ergo4All technology analyses the potential risks for the worker and provides suggestions to lower the risk for the worker.
The 4 manikins are: 5th percentile female, 50th percentile female, 50th percentile male, 95th percentile male, from an American Database.

Modify a worker task

They are two ways to modify a worker task:

  1. Directly click on edit a worker task in the navigator panel. Then you can move the objects and relaunch posture generation to try different scenarios.

Synchronize the environment on the worker task to edit (click on the worker task), then move an object in 3D. The "3D Move Object" panel will open and you will be able to modify the select worker task.

Add other worker tasks

You can create as much worker task as you want inside an operation. You can choose to add worker task before or after the first one by putting your mouse over the worker task previously created.
