IF WE START ECO-DESIGNING CONSUMER GOODS, CAN WE END PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE?
WHAT CHALLENGE DOES L'INCREVABLE ADDRESS?
Many consumer goods hit the market knowing they will be obsolescent in time. For example, the washing machine. The average cost of a new machine is 350€. The purchase price has decreased across time, but the repair cost of washing machines has increased by 125% the last 20 years. So when a consumer needs to repair their machine, they often op to buy a new one because for around the same price they can have access to the latest technology and are less likely to face it breaking again for years.
What if products were designed anticipating their repair and recycling, to make it less expensive and more efficient? The principle is to make every piece removable, changeable, and recyclable. This idea is called Eco-design for End-of-life.

This french startup revolutionizes consumption patterns with a modular washing machine
L’increvable is looking to shake up the large appliance sector by offering reliable, repairable and scalable devices. When Julien Phedyaeff was student at France’s ENSCI, he came up with the concept of an eco-designed washing machine that is fully reparable, designed so that parts can be swapped out as technology evolves, that is can be connected to enable software updates.
