Will SolidWorks References Break If Root Folder Name Changes?

Hi all,

We’re planning to shorten a file path that’s currently too long and causing issues across our systems. The idea is to rename the top-level folder in our project structure.

Example of current path:
Really_Long_Company_Name_Documents/Design/Projects/Project_Name/Product_A/Version_1/Solidworks_Files

We’re only planning to rename the root folder, so it would become something like:
Documents/Design/Projects/Project_Name/Product_A/Version_1/Solidworks_Files

Before proceeding, I’d like to confirm how SolidWorks resolves file references. Is it correct that it uses a bottom-up approach, starting from the active file’s location and searching upward for references?

Would this root folder rename cause broken references, or should everything resolve correctly as long as the relative structure beneath stays intact?

Appreciate any advice or confirmation before we proceed.

Thanks!
