Why is the measure tool giving me 2D values in 3 dimensions?

I am referencing an existing 2D sketch so I can use the dimensions for the sketch I am creating, and the measure tool is giving me what should be two dimensional measurements, in three dimensions.

I would expect to see an X and Y dimension with a "hypotenuse" between them, but instead Solidworks gives me a dZ, which I can use, a Dist, which would be the hyp I mentioned, but then it presents me with the red colored dX and the green dY. This is not the measurement I need. I need a simple 2D measurement.

Attached is a screen shot.

Please help, and thank you.

Tom.
