SOLIDWORKS 2018 SP 2:

This is ridiculous.  I had a motion study of a complex assembly that I had spent hours setting up. I switched to a different SOLIDWORKS window, and when I came back the motion study was deleted. Specifically, all of the keys were gone, but the tab stayed there.

Further testing has determined that this bug occurs on closing SOLIDWORKS, or on switching tabs, regardless of animation complexity.
