What is the purpose of square and star shaped countersunk holes?

Not really a Solidworks question.  I'm a woodworker with occasionally forays into a bit of sheet metal so I was just wondering the reason for this as opposed to round holes.

edit: This is a 3mm steel face plate for a multipoint lock, the square holes are for fixing the lock bodies (supplied fitted) and for fitting onto the side of the door during installation.  The star holes are the lock cylinder retaining screws.
