I need to develop an adjustable friction mechanism for a rodthat slides in and out. One item that came to mind is the mechanismused on round tri-pod legs. It is sort of a slotted ferrule /compression mechanism. But what is it really called? I tried all Icould think of on McMaster-Carr. Better yet, anyone have a link toa source?

I am also considering a design with a split block.... for those oldenough, the same type of design used on your car's sun visor in the60's and 70's. The kind that wore out and resulted in the visorthat would fall into your view on every bump.
