What cut and how?

Hi everyone,

I have a boundary surface (with a rectangular outline) made up of a number of splines drawn on parallel yz-planes. I've then extruded a rectangle drawn on the front plane up to connect with this surface and make a solid body.

All I need to do now to complete my part is cut an irregular profiled shape through the whole solid (a smooth cut with parallel edges if that makes sense, discarding the surrounding parts of the solid).

I can sketch the profile of my cut on either the front plane (back side of the solid if you like) or sketch a spline on the surface but every way I try I fail to get an extruded cut or any other cut to work and cut right through the solid, discarding the left over surrounding outside part.

Incidentally I have to then be able to go back and repeat the exact same cut only this time delete the central part based on the profile and keep the left over outside part (must be a perfect template of the part I've made with the first cut).

It seems so straight forward to do in my head but I can't understand why extruded cut isn't working as I'd like it to.

If further explanation is required then please ask, I can attach what I have too if it helps.

All help and advice is very welcome.

Thanks

David
