I have a very old ( 2012 Professional) SW and need to purchase new laptop for it ( 25-26)

When I asked the reseller they mentioned that there could be issues?

Is it true that a very Old W should not be run on a a new version laptops?

Obviously the re seller wants to sell a new SW License 

So I want to check with others who are independent

Any thoughts?
