So we've had SW and PDM for a while now (6 Years), with a few diff SW versions over time, and I am forever opening files read only and upon closing being told the "File being modified is not checked out ..." which is solely to do with SW opening a file that was created in an earlier version of SW and trying to get you to resave in the current version. Obviously every time you get a new version of SW, all your previous files earlier versions at this point, and it gets worse over time as you create more files, but there is no way people here are going to check out/open/save/check in files individually just to update them. But I also have heard that PDM (which is controlled and adminned by other people) features an update tool that can over a weekend say if you have a ton of files like we do (90000+), resave all your SW files to the latest version of SW automatically ..
So ... apart from getting rid of the damn annoying "File being modified" messages, would there be any improvement with file access/opening speeds? SW can be quite slow here when working on bigger assemblies, although its mostly network related, so dunno if it would have much impact. Are there any other advantages or disadvantages to using this update option?
