Trying to replicate a (complex) .stl model

Hi guys,

I'm trying to replicate and then customize an .stl model I found on Thingiverse, but I'm having some difficulty with one of the design features. The model has too many surfaces to be imported as a solid, but I am using the graphics body as a reference.

I was pretty succesful at reproducing the basic outside shape using the loft command and then using the common feature to slice it, but I can't quite wrap my head around how to make the inside curvature. I tried making a shell of the basic solid shape and then making the bottom part using the dome feature, but that creates a sharp edge between the inverted dome and the outside shell. In the stl model the shapes really flow into eachother very nicely, I'm trying to figure out how this was done. The guy who made it said he used Solidworks, so there has to be a way.

Does anyone have an idea how this was done? I'm beginning to think I might be approaching this from a totally wrong angle... Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks )
