I do a fair bit of surfacing and have been very perplexed at this problem.  I have set the surface, open edges to yellow for high visibility and it works great until I create any new feature.  The surface, open edges in my model then turn to black which is very undesirable.  If I save the file then the open edges turn back to yellow. This is a vicious cycle and I find I spend a lot of time saving my model every feature which is time consuming. Any ideas on this one?  I am running solidworks 2014.
