the above thread got me thinking and at the risk of sounding like awhiner, which i hope not to i thought i would start new thread...
i am an smb and each year my var contacts me about 60days prior tomy subscription expiration soliciting a renewal. Often its ismerely in the form of an email, but sometimes i even get a vmail.that is all the contact i have with my VAR, once a year with theirhand out. You should know that i have called them for tech supp inthe past but not much came of it. nothing against them, just myproblems are usually over their head and easier solved by thisforum where i beleive the real experts reside. so I have to askmyself what value is added to my botton line by the value addedreseller?
sw maintenance fees are the industry std at 20% total cost. iimagine the var gets a cut and i realize this is the biz model andhow they make money, so I do not blame them for their efforts tocollect. but did they earn their pay from my subscription fees? Theremainder goes where? marketing, sales, development and againmarketing?
do i make money w/SW? yes. am i 20% more productive each newrelease? no. so, what if i wanted to opt out of the var and onlyget software upgrades? 10% sounds about right.
i think that if you want the var, you pay for it. otherwise ishould be able to opt out as 20% more productive each release i amnot?
