Shelling a complex solid body

Hi all,

I was here a few weeks ago, asking for advice on a particular aspect of modelling a roofbox. The advice was great, and I'm hoping you can help me out with a strange problem.

I have successfully created a solid body for my upper half of the roofbox, and all that remains is to shell it on the bottom, to create the lid. However, using the shell feature has two issues;

1) I can only shell outward - this is not a massive problem and can be worked around, but it would be good to know why this is the case. I also suspect this is the reason behind 2).

2) Shelling causes the outer shape of the roofbox to be slightly alterered. I will explain with screenshots.

As you can see above, the orange line (the edge of the surface used to construct the solid) follows the contour of the profiles running along the surface. In this case, the shell feature is suppressed.

Now, with the shell feature unsuppressed, it has caused the profile to distort , but the curved profiles still appear.

I've attached the original file if anyone would like to have a look. I can't tell if this is affecting the model or whether it's a graphical glitch - can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Alex
