What is actual use of scale in drawing?

Let's discuss on this example:

If I draw a box of 1x2x3 and use the scale 2:1, its dimensions not changed but become enlaged.

i.e. it is not change to 2x4x6.

So, actually I want to ask that is it only use to utilise sheet space or use for any other purposes?
