I sometimes need to create a reference plane tangent to a round surface to create a feature. I always wind up working around it. What is the correct way to get this done?

I select the first reference (face 1) as the round surface, lets say a cylinder. It automatically selects tangent for me in that same box. But I can never seem to figure out what's need for the second and third reference...
