Here is what I do when I am working with a part and want tochange it's color (or texture mapping or whatever).
Go up to feature manager in upper left hand corner (I may need toclick if configuration manager tab is showing). Right click on the"part" (first item) in the feature tree. Left click on theappearances button, go down to the part, and left click on it.
