Part Files Names and Revisions

Greetings All,

This is my first post and I did try to search this topic but I could not find the answer, maybe I did something wrong.

My company uses 6 digit part numbers (numeric) as assigned by our ERP software system. The numbers are random and have no meaning. So, for our part files, assemblies, and drawings we use these as the file names and this works well.

However, I don't know how to handle revisions.

I have a few questions:

1) When making a revision to a part, I may want to maintain the original part for history, I assume I will need to maintain a part file for each part revision in this case, is that correct?

2) Can I name a part file with the part number and revision level and then populate the title block with those values? What I mean is, can I strip the part number (for the part number field) and then strip the revision level (for the Rev level field) all out of the file name?

Example:

File name: 101203_01.sldprt

Part Number: 101203

Rev: 01

Thank you all for your time, happy holidays
