Orienting an In Context Part

I'm just learning in context design and have a question about best practices. If I use the assembly front plane (or any default plane) to initialy place/orient the part, don't I run the risk of having that part off in space (relitive to the origine) if I open it out of context?. If I create the in place mate of the new part relative to the part it's directly referencing then I run the risk of the part orientation being at some weird angle. Is there a way to reconcile this? In a previous life using another modeling program I could create a coordinate systems in a layout sketch at the top of the assembly that would then be used to locate all the new parts that were being created in context (with the surrounding parts supplying features and references for modeling the new part). Am I making any sense?

What is the best way to solve this conflict?

thanks
