I would like to request a new built-in feature for SOLIDWORKS that allows quick file locking to prevent accidental modifications without the need for a full SOLIDWORKS PDM system. This would be highly beneficial for smaller engineering teams and standalone users working on shared network drives.Key features of this proposal:
Automatic Linkage (Drawing <-> Model): When a user locks a drawing, the system automatically locks the referenced 3D model (part or assembly) in the background. If someone attempts to open the 3D model independently, a warning window appears stating that the model is locked via its drawing, and the drawing must be unlocked first. Unlocking the drawing automatically unlocks the model.
Instant Visual Indicator (Button/Icon): The lock status should be immediately visible in the user interface. I suggest placing a clear indicator button at the bottom of the screen (e.g., below the FeatureManager design tree).
Green color = File is unlocked, editing is allowed.
Red color = File is locked, editing is blocked.
Fully Optional Feature: To prevent conflicts for larger companies already using full PDM systems, this feature must be completely optional. Users should be able to toggle it on or off within the System Options.
Benefits:
This feature will drastically reduce human errors and prevent accidental overwriting of finished production drawings and models. It provides instant visual control over the document state directly inside the workspace, without needing to check file properties in Windows Explorer.
