Migrating files from SolidWorks Maker to SolidWorks Classic (Pro Startup) – Part file compatibility

Hello everyone,

I'm currently using SolidWorks Maker, and I'd like to migrate to a Classic SolidWorks license (Pro Startup) to make it easier to exchange files with other users and clients who aren't on the Maker ecosystem.

A reseller told me that it wouldn't be possible to reopen files created in SolidWorks Maker once I switch to the classic version, which worries me quite a bit given the amount of work already done (parts, assemblies, drawings).

So I'd like to know:

  • Is this limitation actually real, and if so, at what level does it apply (proprietary file format, license lock, etc.)?

  • Is there an intermediate export method or format that would preserve the design tree (features, sketches, dimensions) rather than just the raw geometry (as a STEP export would)?

  • Has anyone already gone through this Maker → Classic migration and can share their experience?

Thanks in advance!
