Hello,
I hope I have phrased my question correctly. I am trying to measure cross-sectional wall thickness in a part using SW2010 [tools] [measure].
High precision is not desired, I merely want to select a reference plane and take "thumbnail" measurements of the exact mouse click, point-to-point, on that plane; even if the click missed the actual line, or is not on a mid, end, quad, etc.... Snapping behaviors will not permit this, and line attribute handles (end, midpoint, etc...) are not sufficiently comprehensive.
See graphic below: I want to know the rough thickness of the tapered wall, as shown in the cross section below, at the red arrows. Using the measure tool, clicking the approximate middle on each side (at the red arrows) it automatically snaps to measuring points to the top of each line, which is clearly not useful to me. Indeed, I can calculate the thickness, but with some effort, time and risk of human error. I can also try to select mid-point (blue dots) but you can see they are at differing heights in Y and therefore that method would yield a measurement that is not what I am after, not to mention a distraction from the fact that I need to suppress snapping behaviors and measure at points of my absolute discretion.
Similarly, when creating a part which I will output to CAM for CNC (pocketed text being an example) I sometimes need to quickly take strange measurments to assess the needed cutter clearance. I need to be able to select a plane, zoom in close, click the exact point of my interest, click similarly the compliment, and get a figure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Dan
