Hi All,
I’ve been having some interesting discussions with Matt Lorono who works as part of our Product Definition team and is in charge of SOLIDWORKS MBD. He wants to get the message out that SW MBD should not be thought of as 3D Drawings and feels it’s important we manage customer expectations when it comes to MBD tools. It seems customers often expect to have all the same annotations they are used to in 2D Drawings, like center marks, centerlines and so forth, but in reality, the drafting standards for model based definition do not require these old drafting tools. We should be sure customers exploring SW MBD are prepared for a slightly different approach for communicating product manufacturing information (PMI) in 3D. And that they are aware that some of the 2D tools that are not used in SW MBD are not limitations, but actually the result of drafting standards evolving past old drafting techniques. Training is an excellent venue to bring this understanding to users and this information will likely be included in a future release of the MBD course manual.
Note: MBD drafting standards include AMSE Y14.41-2012 and related ISO Standard
Cheers,
