Planning to purchase a Dell M6800 for Solidworks. It will also be used for the typical Outlook, Excel, general daily activities.
I'm using SW2013 SP3 currently. The stats from one of my larger assemblies is 1320 components, 77 sub assemblies, 20 uniqe sub assemblies. No rendering and minimal FEA.
I've talked with my reseller recently who got me started in a direction with some basic info and I'm trying to nail down the details now. He recommended an i7 and a faster lower number of cores vs. slower higher number of cores. Sounded good but as I'm choosing options that seems to bring some limitations with it. For instance, picking a dual core only allows the use of 2 of the 4 dimm slots. I'm not up on hardware details but that seems silly to forgo the extra two slots for the future.
PROCESSOR
Looking for help picking from the following options. I'll say that option 5 and most likely 4 are out of the question due to price increase. That leaves me with a decision between 1 and 3.
1. Intel Core i7-4600M (Dual Core 2.90GHz, x.xGHz Turbo, 4MB 37W, w/HD Graphics 4600) [Included in Price]
2. Intel Core i7-4700MQ (Quad Core 2.40GHz, x.xGHz Turbo, 6MB 47W, w/HD Graphics 4600) [subtract \$20.40]
3. Intel Core i7-4800MQ (Quad Core 2.70GHz, 3.7GHz Turbo, 6MB 47W, w/HD Graphics 4600) [add \$95.20]
4. Intel Core i7-4900MQ (Quad Core 2.80GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo, 8MB 47W, w/HD Graphics 4600) [add \$231.20]
5. Intel Core i7-4930MX (Quad Core Extreme 3.00GHz, 3.9GHz Turbo, 8MB 57W, w/HD Graphics 4600) [add \$707.20]
GRAPHICS CARD
Don't need any suggestions here. The 4100 seems to be the sweet spot for me regarding price/performance. Dropping to the 3100 can save \$300 which could be used for other changes if necessary though. Trade off must be worth it regarding performance though.

RAM
Looking for feedback if I will notice any difference, whether now or in the future between 1600 and 1866MHz ram. Faster always seems better in computerland but will it be a noticeable or significant difference for Solidworks is the question. The processor choice of dual core also limits the choice to 1600MHz. and 2 sticks (Options 1 & 3). Ultimately wondering if choice 6 would be worth the money if the chosen processor allows it.
1. 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3L [subtract \$108.80]
2. 16GB (4x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3L [subtract \$3.40]
3. 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L [Included in Price]
4. 32GB (4x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L [add \$187.00]
5. 8GB (2x4GB) 1866MHz DDR3L [subtract \$51.68]
6. 16GB (4x4GB) 1866MHz DDR3L [add \$95.20]
I appreciate any feedback! Thanks.
