Short form: Is there a good method to update variables of referenced files (in Contains tab) or do any batch operation such as a 'transition' on them?

Long form: I'm trying to update approval date variable of all referenced files of a change order form after it is approved. Currently I'm using a dispatch code with shell commands and windows registry as my clipboard to copy variables from change order file to its referenced files during a transition. I am wondering if there is a cleaner method out there.
