How to make Configuration Assembly Drawings

I have a complex assembly with several configurations setup.  I want to be able to make a single drawing (if that is possible) that will update to each configuration when I select it.  I can select the configuration I want to be active and the views will update.  My problem is some dimensions only exist in one of the configurations (they link to parts that are not present in the other configurations) so show up as un-resolved when I switch to the other configuration.  I can't find a way to "tag" a dimension for which configuration it should display for?

I tried making a copy of the drawing (save as copy) so I could set one drawing file to one configuration and another to the other configuration but when I delete a dimension from the drawing where it isn't referenced it also is automatically deleted from the other drawing file (doesn't matter if that file is open at the time or not) so SW must actually be storing the dimensions in the assembly file, not in the drawing file.  Is there any way to have multiple drawing files of the same assembly and not have SW link the dimensions in each drawing together?
